Disgraced TV star tracked down after fleeing Australia
Convicted paedophile and ex-Australian TV star Robert Hughes has been tracked down to his new residence in the UK after fleeing Australia following a stint in prison.
The 73-year-old, who played Martin Kelly on Hey Dad! from 1987 to 1993, was released in June after more than six years in custody for the sexual abuse of young girls, including Sarah Monahan, who played his on-screen daughter Jenny.
He was deported from Sydney’s Long Bay jail, moved to Villawood Detention Centre, then went to Salisbury in England.
Several of the victims Hughes targeted in the 1980s and ’90s, including Ms Monahan, have spoken publicly about the abuse they endured.
“He will never say sorry. He’ll never say it. I’m not going to beg for it. I’m not going to ask for it,” she said.
“I don’t think he’ll ever change. he’s too set in his ways. He’s too old to ever change. And he’s too arrogant."
According to court documents, the bulk of Hughes’ crimes were committed before he secured the lead role of Martin Kelly on the hit Channel 7 sitcom that ran for 7 years.
In 2014 he was handed a 10-year-and-9-month prison sentence after receiving 10 convictions for child sex offences that included sexual intercourse without consent and multiple acts of indecent assault. Hughes has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
