Man arrested after eight alleged hit-and-runs

A Queensland man has been arrested after eight alleged hit-and-run incidents across a three-hour period in Sydney on Sunday.

The 35-year-old man was caught driving a rented grey Holden Equinox SUV more than 45 kilometres per hour over the speed limit along the Central Coast at 8.20am and had his licence suspended on the spot.

NSW Police allege that less than an hour later, the man struck a cyclist in Lindfield, leaving a 48-year-old man with abrasions to his hip and elbow. The SUV then allegedly hit another cyclist nearby, causing a 55-year-old man to suffer five fractured ribs and a fractured collarbone.

Shortly after the driver allegedly blocked three lanes at the Eastern Distribution tunnel after ramming a car from behind and hit two other vehicles in Kensington.

At 10am the SUV allegedly knocked off another cyclist in Matraville. The 36-year-old cyclist sustained cuts to his elbow and back. About half an hour later the SUV allegedly collided with more cars in Glebe and Epping.

Police said the driver failed to stop at every incident.

The man was arrested in Penrith on Monday morning and taken to Nepean Hospital for blood and urine testing.

Detectives will allege the incidents were intentional, said North Shore Police Area Commander Superintendent Jenny Scholz.

“From the interaction [police] had with him, they had some concerns in regards to his mental health,” she said.
