Australia’s most expensive supermarket revealed

A nationwide survey from consumer advocacy group CHOICE has ranked Australia’s major supermarkets from the cheapest to the most expensive.

The survey found German chain Aldi to be Australia’s cheapest supermarket by quite some distance, with Woolworths consistently cheaper than major rival Coles.

CHOICE brought 33 common items at 110 Coles, Woolworth and Aldi supermarkets across Australia and ranked them based on the average total basket price.

A basket of leading brand products from Aldi cost on average just $91.76, compared to Coles and Woolworths which cost $170.54 and $168.74 respectively.

CHOICE spokesman Tom Godfrey commented on the results: “The big supermarkets make a lot of very loud claims about value, but it’s clear Aldi is Australia’s cheapest supermarket and it is forcing the big two to compete on price.”

One thing that Aldi is outperformed on however is use of local ingredients.

Of the 28 food items purchased in each of the retailers, Coles had 22 which contained at least some Aussie ingredients, Woolworths had 21, but Aldi only had 15.
