Your $1 coin might be worth thousands

Anyone who’s watched Antiques Roadshow would understand that sometimes it’s the most innocuous looking items that are worth the most money.

With that in mind, it might be an idea to check any $1 coin you’ve got in your wallet, drawer or piggy bank. And think twice before putting one into a vending machine.

Thanks to a printing error that occurred way back in 2000, a number of $1 coins have a rare “double rim” that is worth anywhere between $1000 - $3000 to collectors.

The Australian Coin Collecting Blog says the value depends on the quality of the coin, "The value of your rare coin will now depend on the condition. After spending 17 years in circulation, some coins are more valuable than others."

6000-7000 of these coins are expected to still be in circulation.
