How long should you be exercising for?
Exercise is a helpful way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep balance in your life. But how much and how long should you be exercising for?
The National Australian Guidelines recommends if you are looking to do light exercise with medium intensity, then you should be aiming to do it for between 150 to 300 minutes per week.
Vigorous exercise requires 75 to 150 minutes per week.
Doing simple activities like walking around your neighbourhood, taking part in yoga classes, or picking up some light weights for at least 30 minutes per day is enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Sitting down for chunks of your day can lead to health problems that are hard to get rid of once they’re there – including lower back pain, hip pain and knee and ankle injuries.
Making the effort to move around the room after sitting down for long periods of time can help stretch and loosen your muscles and ensure you're getting in daily doses of exercise.
However, if you are not exercising – now is the best time to start.
“Start by doing some exercise,” the guideline recommends, “and gradually build up the recommended amount.”
