Legendary fashion designer Carla Zampatti remains in hospital after a serious fall on the weekend.

The 78-year-old is "under observation" at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital after falling down a flight of stairs at the opening of La Traviata at Mrs Macquaries Point on Friday night.

“Carla Zampatti had a fall at the opera on Sydney Harbour on Friday night and is currently in hospital for observation,” a family spokesman said.

“Carla is very grateful for the support from medically trained members of the audience who assisted and for the excellent care from the team at St Vincent’s Hospital.”

Zambatti was unconscious after the fall and was being comforted by an audience member.

A first aid professional from the audience assisted before ambulance officers treated Zampatti at the scene and she was transported to hospital.

Born in Italy with her family settling in Australia in 1950, she is regarded a pioneer of the fashion industry with big name celebrities here and abroad dedicated fans of her brand.
