Historic euthanasia laws passed in Victoria

Historic voluntary euthanasia laws have been passed in the state of Victoria, after a marathon sitting overnight in the state’s lower house that went well into Friday.

The legislation will now head to Parliament’s upper house, with supporters of the assisted dying bill hopeful they have the numbers required to pass the laws.

Exhausted MPs sat through a gruelling session with opponents moving hundreds of amendments in an effort to delay the bill’s passage, but they were all defeated.

The proposed laws would give terminally ill people with less than 12 months to live who are suffering unbearable pain the ability to request lethal medication.

There was reportedly an applause in the chamber once the numbers were finally in.
