Jimmy Barnes gets candid about surgery
Jimmy Barnes has given a bit more insight into how he found out he needed urgent surgery and for how long he’ll be out of action.
The 66-year-old rocker shared a video on Instagram explaining how about five decades of jumping off PA systems and bending over at the waist has caused severe pain to his back and hips.
He revealed that it was about two months ago before announcing the shocking news that he knew he would have to have surgery…but he just kept putting it off despite having a history of back pain.
“I’ve been having back troubles for about eight years,” Barnes said on Sunrise.
“About eight years ago, I had a whole bunch of surgeries that actually got quite serious and it was sort of filling the gap - keeping me moving, keeping me sane.
“I’ve got to realise that after 50 years of jumping off PAs... running like a lunatic, all that sort of stuff has finally caught up with me.”
Two month prior, Barnes underwent a MRI and other tests before the surgeon told him that his back is “shot” and he would require surgery.
“I said ‘I’ll put it off, I’ll put it off’,” he continued.
“But for the last two months, I’ve actually been in excruciating pain and you know, I’ve done lots of shows but people don’t know this because I scream so much anyway.”
Barnes said he may be out of action for about four months but will take six months in order to completely heal.
“That is my plan, to try and actually do the right thing, and hopefully then when I come back I’ll be ready,” he said.
The singer is hoping to write a book during his time off and maybe even a new rock and roll album.
