7 outdated makeup rules you should break

If you devoured beauty magazines as a teenager, you’ll probably remember reading some of these beauty rules.

But rather than taking them as gospel, it’s important to realise that everybody is different. The rules that work for some people may be completely untrue for others.

That’s why it’s important to know that makeup ‘rules’ should really just be considered guidelines. See what works for you, your face shape, your features and your personality.

Here are some of the popular makeup rules that we think need to be banished.

1. Only apply mascara to your top lashes

It was thought that mascara on the top and bottom lashes made your eyes look smaller, but in fact the opposite is true. By slicking it on top and bottom it can make your eyes look wider and brighter. Just ensure it is not too thick (no spider eyes please).

2. Don’t match your eye shadow to your eye colour

It’s all a matter of trial and error, but blue eyes with blue shadow can look stunning if done well. Try to go for a tone that is slightly darker than your eye colour if you can, as the contrast will make your eye colour stand out.

3. Blush is just for the apples of your cheeks

In reality it should go where you would naturally go red when flushed. For most people, that’s cheeks, a little on the bridge of the nose, and even a bit on the forehead.

4. Choose a smoky eye or a bold lip, not both

You are better off going for balance all over rather than a party up the top or bottom only. Just try not to be too heavy handed.

5. Avoid mixing gold and silver makeup

Nobody wants to look like a Transformer, but the right combination of any colour of eye shadow can look just right if you blend it well. Glitter can also be used to great effect.

6. Wear cool colours if you have cool skin tone

The same rule states that warm skin tones shouldn’t wear warm coloured makeup. We call BS on this, as the contrast you can make by mixing things up can look truly stunning.

7. False eyelashes are a strictly night time affair

With the new style of semi-permanent false lashes, you can have pony eyes all day and night if you so desire.

Have you broken any of these so-called beauty rules? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
