5 things we’ve learnt (and loved) about fashion from Baddie Winkle
With over one million followers on Instagram and the catchphrase of, “stealing your man since 1928” social media sensation Baddie Winkle is taking the Internet by storm. Creating even more common ground between our generation and that of our grandchildren, the 86-year old grandmother is proving that age is just a number. After landing youthful streetwear brand Dimepiece’s “State of mind” clothing campaign, Winkle has since been featured on ad billboards in the US and her smiling face can be seen across the web. To celebrate, here are five of the things we’ve learnt (and loved) about fashion from the OG Baddie Winkle.
1. Don’t be afraid to experiment
Articles today are so often persistent in the suggestion that once you’re older, you should stop taking fashion risks. But in crop tops, chains and jumpers laden with pop-star Justin Bieber’s face, Baddie Winkle shows she’s not afraid to take a risk at any age.
2. Play with prints and colour
On that note, don’t shy away from print and colour. Clad in leopard, tie-dye and colourful graphics, Winkle has us all once again reaching for our tie-dyed frocks of our earlier years.
3. You can still wear bright make-up
We already know Baddie Winkle isn’t afraid to wear bright colours, but this isn’t limited to just her clothes. The rebellious Winkle wears lipsticks in bold shades of bright magenta and firey blood-orange, drawing even more attention to her infectious smile.
4. It’s All About Confidence
In her latest campaign for Dimepiece, Winkle is dressed almost exclusively in swimwear, and she isn’t shy about baring the assets she was born with. She shows that the key to pulling off any daring look is not found in the most youthful or rock-hard body, but in the confidence of the wearer. Opting for a shirt that boldly says, “I’d rather date myself” Winkle has got enough confidence for us all.
5. Age is just a number
A living incarnation of her campaign’s “State of mind” concept, Winkle shows us that dressing cool and confidently is less about what you wear and more about how you wear it. It’s simple: if it makes you feel good, wear it. Age is just an abstract measurement of time; “cool” is a state of mind.
