Duchess Kate stuns in Princess Diana's tiara
The Duchess of Cambridge never steps a foot out of line when it comes to her style choices, and this time it was no different.
The royal stunned guests at a state banquet held at Buckingham Palace with her lavish accessories, which included a dazzling tiara and an expensive set of diamond and pearl earrings and necklace.
The Lover’s Knot tiara that was worn by the Duchess was known to be one of the late Princess Diana’s most loved jewellery items.
The tiara has an extensive history amongst the royal household, having graced the heads of many important royal figures since 1818.
The lavish accessory, which according to Princess Diana was so heavy it gave her headaches, is a recreation of a tiara worn by the Queen Mother’s grandmother, Princess Augusta of Hesse.
Princess Augusta, who was also the Duchess of Cambridge before her death, received the beautiful piece of jewellery as a gift when she married Prince Adolphus in 1818.
After falling in love with the original, the Queen Mother commissioned Garrard jewellers to create a replica of her grandmother’s tiara, which then went on to be worn by many.
After Princess Diana married Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth gifted Diana the tiara but after her passing, it was kept in a safe until it found its way into Duchess Kate’s jewellery collection.
Kate was the first to showcase the stunning tiara after Diana’s passing, wearing it for the first time in 2015.
The banquet was held in honour of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands for their visit to the UK.
While the tiara stole the show, Kate paired it with a set of understated earrings and necklace by Collingwood.
The pearl drop earrings were also a part of Diana’s collection and the necklace belonged to Queen Alexandra, as she wore the sought-after piece for the first time on her wedding day.
The Duchess stepped out in a floor-length Alexander McQueen gown, a favourite of the Duchess who chose the designer to create her much loved wedding dress in 2011.
Prince William wore a traditional black suit with a white bowtie and two military medals as he met with officials from surrounding countries.
Hostess Queen Elizabeth opted for the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, which was created in the early 1890s. She chose to add a brooch that featured the Cullinan III and IV diamonds to her classic ivory dress.
The exclusive guest list included some of the nations most important figures, such as Prime Minister Theresa May and the Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.
The Dutch royals hoped that this visit will ensure a strong bond between the UK and the Netherlands after the UK’s controversial decision to split from the EU.
