How Aussie TV stars are getting their hair done in lockdown while other celebrities opt to do it themselves

Overgrown hair and exposed roots – the new norm for women in Sydney and Melbourne as the lockdown continues. But how are TV presenters still looking picture perfect?

From Ten’s Carrie Bickmore, Lisa Wilkinson and Sandra Sully to Nine’s Allison Langdon and Rebecca Maddern and Seven’s Natalie Barr and Edwina Bartholomew – there’s not a single grey or grown out roots to be seen.

A Nine spokesperson explained media and journalism had an exemption under the current health order and therefore, due to the nature of productions, hair and make-up artists were considered authorised workers.

This rule also applied to other TV networks including Seven, Ten, The ABC and SBS.

“Hair and make-up teams are regularly tested and screened for COVID” the spokes person said.

“They have been supplied PPE that they are required to wear whilst working”.

“They also have undergone additional industry-lead Covid training to enforce required protocols”.

The spokesperson stressed Nine is taking Covid safe plans extremely seriously, with onsite testing. Other networks are said to follow a similar procedure.

“Everyone entering the hair and makeup area are asked to undertake a PCR swab test 72 hours before they have their appointment”, they said.

“Nine also has recently commenced Rapid Antigen testing onsite. Nine’s on-air talent are Covid tested twice weekly”.

While major network presenters were taken care of under the exemption, a whole host of other celebrities and influencers are without usual access to high-end beauty treatment. From Jessica Franklin to Jessica Row, Mia Freedman and Melissa Leong, A-listers are forced to take matters into their own hands.

At home haircuts and supermarket box dyes have taken place of the treatments with high-end stylists.

Jessica Rowe gave her pink hair a workover, enlisting husband newsreader Peter Overton’s help.

“Definition of true love…when your husband helps colour the back of your hair even through he hates it pink!!” she captioned the photo of her hair being done.

Like Rowe, media personality Mia Freedman also used a dye delivery service to colour her roots back to brunette.

“So I did my roots”, Freedman captioned her Instagram video. “I was due for a cut and colour right before lockdown. And last time I stuffed my hair by dyeing it, it looks too dark at home. This time I bought a customised colour kit. I think we can all agree that no hairdresser has to watch their back after watching this video”.
