Clever hacks to fix common make-up problems

Panda eyes: Nothing ruins a good makeup look like the travelling of eyeliner down your face halfway through the day. Avoid this problem by using an oil-free concealer beneath your eyes under your eyelashes, set with a translucent powder.

Creased lids: If you find your eye shadow creases as the night draws on, skip applying foundation to your lids before you apply your shadow, which can cause excess oil build up. Instead, try a crease-proof eye shadow formula.

Orange glow: If you’ve tried to add bronzer into your beauty repertoire but can’t seem to create anything but an artificial, orange “glow”, remember to only apply the bronzer where the sun would naturally hit your face: your cheekbones, your forehead and so on.

Obvious contouring: Contouring is the easiest way to fake or enhance a strong bone structure, but if you do it wrong, you could end up looking more mannequin-esque than you planned. Apply a small amount of your contouring powder/liquid under your cheek bones, along either side of your nose, and on your jawline, and blend. Blending is the key to making the effect look more natural.

Shiny skin: If you find your skin gets oily throughout the day, try applying a matte primer under your foundation first, after your moisturiser, and set with a powder. Failing that, you can use a blotter throughout the day. We like Benefit Cosmetics’ “porefection” trio for all three.

Travelling mascara: Stop your mascara from getting onto your upper lid by looking down when you apply it to your lashes.

Lipstick teeth: Stop your favourite shade of lipstick from transferring onto your teeth with one after-application technique: Put your pointer finger in your mouth, wrapping your lips around it and pull it out. This will eliminate lipstick from the areas of the lips that would have transferred onto your pearly whites.

Creased concealer: Keep your concealer from creasing by applying a face oil first. Find out how here.
