How to prevent male hair loss

For many men, thinning and balding hair is just a reality that comes with ageing. If you’re one of the 50 per cent of men who see thinning hair by the age of 50, with these tips, you can help prevent or slow the hair-loss process.

1. Change your shampoo – “Thickening” hair shampoos may make your hair look like it has more body, but they won’t slow hair loss. You need to use a shampoo that contains Ketoconazole, which causes your hair follicles to produce less testosterone, a contributing factor to hair loss. This can be used in conjunction with Rogaine, a hair loss treatment that has been proven to be effective in prevention.

2. Eat better – Low iron, low protein, and too much fatty food could be a contributing factor in your hair loss. Eat a well-balanced diet to see improvements in all aspects of your life, including on top of your head.

3. Check out your health – Sometimes, hair loss comes as a result of an underlying health problem, such as nutritional, hormonal or thyroid issues. If you notice your hair is thinning, on top especially, consult a doctor to see if there’s a deeper cause.

4. Get treated – If you’re not satisfied with prevention and just want your old hair back, the closest you’ll get might be by hair transplant. With modern science, you can have hair follicles robotically harvested from the back of your head and placed where hair is lacking. This process is less prone to complications and scarring than the traditional transplant method but is expensive.

Additionally, you can look into laser therapy: a hair-encouraging light proven to improve hair density. This comes in the form of either doctor administered treatments, or a “laser cap” which you wear beneath a hat to stimulate hair growth.
