6 more tips for colouring your hair at home

In January, we brought you six tips for colouring your hair at home, but as it turns out, there’s much more advice out there. So, we scoured the internet and found another six ways for you to ensure your home dye job looks just as good as if the pros had done it.

1. Never go from one extreme to the other

So, you decided red wasn’t your style and are dyeing (sorry!) to give blonde a try? While this one is best done by a colourist, you can do it at home – as long as you do it right. “Stay within two shades, lighter or darker, of your current colour,” L'Oréal Paris colourist Kari Hill tells Good Housekeeping. Simply match your current colour with a box of dye and choose from one of the shades either side.

2. Grab your toothbrush

Want to add some highlights? All you need is a toothbrush and a dye kit two shades lighter than your current colour. Simply paint the highlights on where the sun would hit (around your hairline and part) Just remember not to use the toothbrush again afterwards!

3. Start from the top

Your roots need the most colour and take the longest time to dye, so apply the colour there first before combing it through the rest of your hair, working in four to six sections. This way, you’ll avoid that awful two-tone look.

4. Use more than one mirror

It might look great from the front, but it’s worth using an extra mirror to check every section of hair and make sure you don’t miss a spot. There’s nothing worse, right?

5. Prepare for stains

Have a generous amount of makeup or wet wipes on hand to catch spills, splatters and drops as they happen. As anyone who’s experienced it before will tell you, stains set quickly and are painfully difficult to remove.

6. Use a shower cap

You’ve painted on all the dye and now it’s time to play the waiting game. Pop your locks up into a disposable shower cap to prevent staining and enable you to go about your normal household activities while the dye sets.
