Candid snap of Princess Mary on Mother's Day and wedding anniversary!
Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark has penned a touching tribute to his wife, Princess Mary, alongside a throwback snap of the Australian-born royal and their young daughter.
In the picture, posted in celebration of Mother’s Day and the royal couple’s 19th wedding anniversary, Mary is beaming next to their then-toddler daughter, both with an ice cream in hand.
“My wife and I have our wedding anniversary today,” the 54-year-old wrote. “A very special day for both of us, as we like to mark - also with our four children.
“This year the day coincides with Mother's Day. Therefore, special love for you, Mary, as a spouse and as a mother.
“And at the same time, I would like to say happy mother's day to all the mothers around the whole country.”
Supporters were thrilled with the never-before-seen snap, and the rare public outpouring of love from Frederik, flocking to the royal family’s Instagram comment section to join in on the celebration.
“Frederik, you really are a hero and absolutely fantastic man,” came one popular comment. “What a nice message to send to your wife and all us mothers in the whole country … Congratulations on your wedding day”.
“Congratulations on your 19th wedding anniversary - an important day for all Danes for that day we all got a totally fantastic crown prince couple,” one royal fan wrote. “Congratulations to all of us and thank you for doing so amazingly well”.
Others wanted to share their own stories with the family, throwing it back to Mary and Frederik’s 2004 wedding day.
“Huge big congratulations! 19 years! Remember it like it was yesterday, I watched your wedding on TV totally pregnant. And the next day our lovely boy came into the world,” one shared. “Thank you for also remembering all mothers [on] this fine sunny day, dear Frederik.”
“The beautiful May day in 2004, was a big day for Denmark - we got our Mary,” wrote another. “Big congratulations to you and to us”.
Some, however, took notice of how Frederik had omitted specific mention of his own mother, Queen Margarethe.
Tensions had reportedly been high for the Danish royals as 2022 drew to a close, though they had come together to celebrate Margarethe’s 83rd birthday in April.
And with the broad celebration of mothers all across Denmark, most were happy to accept that Margarethe had been included in that tribute, and a fellow recipient of the love.
