Commonwealth Games: Cameras capture Cate Campbell’s reaction to sister Bronte’s win
It’s been a something of a gold rush for the Aussies at the Commonwealth Games, and while our athletes have been whipping spectators into a frenzy with their successes, viewers were quick to comment on this video footage of Cate Campbell in the bleachers.
News.com.au reports Bronte Campbell sparked scenes of pandemonium in the pool on Tuesday with her strong finish to the woman’s 4x100m relay that saw us sneak past Canada to claim the gold medal.
The Channel 7 camera turned to the crowd to capture the wild scenes of delirium, but eagle-eyed viewers couldn’t help but notice the muted celebration from Bronte’s sister Cate.

Appearing on Sunrise the next morning, Cate quashed rumours of unrest, saying the jubilant crowd in the pool that night was one of the highlights of the games.
“For me, it was the crowd,” she said.
“The atmosphere that was in that stadium. If there was a roof it would have been blown off. It was incredible. And I would have to say last night, being in the stands watching and I think we won eight gold medals. Eight gold medals in one night.
“The Poms were sitting next to us and every time the national anthem came on they were like, ‘Oh god, not this song again.’ And we were like, ‘Yes! Girt by sea!’”
Bronte also spoke glowingly of her sister Cate’s achievements at the games.
“It could have gone either way, I would have been happy if Cate had done it, it would have been a fair call as well,” Bronte said.
“They chose to give me the spot, I’m really honoured and pleased that they did.”
