6 fun family games to play these holidays

The school holiday season often means whole family catch-ups. Sure, you could watch a movie together but it’s much more fun to play some silly family games. No matter how young (or old!), these games will have the whole family laughing and creating new memories.

1. Family charades

Divide into two teams and think about some classic moments from your family’s past – the one’s that always get remembered and retold. It doesn’t have to be holiday-related, just ones that have often become part of your family’s folklore. Now have fun acting them out while the other team guesses.

2. Newlywed Game (family edition)

The Newlywed Game is an American TV show that pits newly married couples against each other to find out how well they know their partner (or not!). It’s a fun game to play but pair up “odd couples”. Don’t couple up the husband and wife but pair grandma and grandson, a niece and aunt, sister and brother and so on. Each pair writes down a list of questions to ask the other to see how well they know them: What’s my favourite food? What’s my favourite book? Where would I like to holiday next year? What is my most prized possession? Now go around the circle and ask your questions. You might be surprised about what you find out!

3. Sticker stalker

Great for those who have a large extended family over for the holidays. Distribute holiday sticker sheets to everyone at the beginning of the day. Throughout the day everyone must get rid of their stickers by sticking them on others without them noticing! If someone does catch you, they can stick all their stickers on you.

4. Who am I?

Not a new idea but this time make it personal – you could decide it will be from characters from a family favourite movie or TV show. Maybe it could even be people in your family! If you have leftover Santa hats why not extend the festive mood and pin the names on each hat. Now everyone can ask questions of each other to try and guess who they are. There are sure to be some hilarious questions and answers.

5. Family history trivia

This one takes a little preparation but it’s well worth it. Create questions around your family history but include ones that will take some hard thinking. It might be “What dessert did Nanna bring to Christmas lunch three years ago?” or “What present did Uncle Jim give you when you were ten?” Split into teams (have adults with young ones to help them along) and get ready to compete.

6. Camera hot potato

You’ll need a digital camera with a self-timer on it. The camera gets passed around with the ticking timer reading to go off. Everyone has to do a quick selfie pose with the camera before passing it on. The result is lots of photos of crazy faces to laugh over!
