Human food that your dog can eat too

We’ve learnt what’s good for us is not always good for our pooches so let’s look at the “dog-approved” human foods that are safe for our pooch’s tummies.

1. Peanut butter

A favourite treat for both humans and canines, the occasional scoop of unsalted peanut butter is a good source of protein and healthy heart fats, vitamin B, niacin, and vitamin E. Stuff it into a KONG ball and your pooch will be entertained for hours.

2. Yoghurt

High in calcium and protein, yoghurt is a great treat for your dog, especially if they suffer from digestive problems. Only opt for plain yoghurts that contain no added sugar or artificial sweeteners.

3. Cheese

As long as your dog isn’t lactose intolerant, low or reduced fat varieties of cheese (such as cottage cheese) can make a great treat. Make sure you don’t overfeed as many cheeses can be high in fat.

4. Cooked meat

If your pooch needs some extra protein, cooked chicken, turkey, lean ground beef, chuck steak or roast are a great addition to their regular food. Always cook meat well.

5. Vegetables

Full of vitamins, fibre and some crunch that’s good for canine teeth, veggies make a great treat. Try raw veggies like carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce, capsicum, pumpkin and celery grated or finely chopped. Or steam green beans, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, and squash.

6. Salmon
A great source of omega 3 fatty acids, cooked salmon will also help keep your dog’s coat healthy and shiny.

7. Fruit
Except for grapes and raisins, most fruit is fine for your pup. Try sliced banana, apples, watermelon or blueberries. Apple cores should not be given to dogs, as their seeds can cause trouble.

8. Pasta and race
Your pooch can have pasta and rice once in a while. Just make sure it’s plain and cooked.
