The popular girls name that could soon become extinct
Baby names are constantly going in and out of fashion, but new research has revealed a former popular name is on the verge of becoming extinct.
According to a Quartz study, Heather is becoming a rare name all because of one iconic '80s movie.
In 1975, Heather was among the top five most popular girls’ names in the US with over 24,000 babies being given the name.
However, the name has decreased in popularity more than any other name that was formerly in the top 1000.
In 2017, only 291 babies were named Heather.
According to an investigation by Deadspin, the dislike of the name stems from the '80s film Heathers starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.
Unfortunately, the 1989 flick made the name “synonymous with all that is evil about cliquey high school girls”.
In the movie, all the mean girls shared the name Heather and it left a bitter taste in viewers’ mouths.
