Why the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might need to change the royal baby's name

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been gearing up in preparation for their new arrival and although we don’t know if they will have a son or daughter, many fans are hoping the couple will honour Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.

Duchess Meghan has made headlines in the past for paying tribute to Princess Di – whether it’s inherited pieces of jewellery or talking about her life and legacy – so will she soon welcome the late royal’s namesake?

Punters all around the world are betting on what they think Baby Sussex’s name will be, the leading contender being Diana with Victoria trailing closely behind.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had Diana in mind when naming their first daughter, Princess Charlotte. The three-year-old tot’s full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, which honours not just her late grandmother, but her great-grandmother as well.

While bets are still running hot for the new royal baby’s name, the title also remains uncertain. Since the couple were bestowed as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their wedding day back in May 2018, tradition says the eldest son of a Duke will inherit his father’s title.

If baby Sussex is a boy, he might be known as Earl of Dumbarton, the secondary Sussex title before he inherits Dukedom, the chairman of Burke’s Peerage, William Bortrick told People magazine.

Daughters will be known as Lady (her name) Windsor while any younger sons will be called Lord (his name) Windsor.

However, Queen Elizabeth may decide to take a completely different direction and give the soon-to-be parent’s child a title similar to their royal cousins – Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3 and Prince Louis, 11 months.

Last year in a joint interview, Harry and Meghan paid tribute to the late Princess Diana by sharing their plans to ensure her legacy remains strong.

“They’d be thick as thieves, without question,” Harry admitted, referring to his late mother and now wife. “I think she [Diana] would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me. But I think she would have been best friends with Meghan,” he said.

The Duke revealed in efforts to keep his mother “with us on this crazy journey together,” he proposed to Meghan with a ring with two diamonds from PrincessDi’s personal collection, as well as a stone from Botswana – the first holiday Harry and Meghan took together as a couple, three to four weeks into their relationship.

When choosing the baby’s royal name, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might have to jump an extra hoop before the moniker for their first child is officially decided.

Traditionally, the Queen must approve the name of the royal baby.

The name must also be told to the Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, first before anyone else is informed.
