What really goes on behind the scenes of My Kitchen Rules

Controversial Victorian contestants Roula and Rachael have lifted the lid on what it’s really like behind the scene of Channel Seven’s hit cooking show My Kitchen Rules.

Previously revealing that contestants are forced to use sponsor cooking appliances they’ve never tried before, outspoken Roula and Rachael opened up about how the filming sessions of the instant restaurants can last hours and how they’re banned from speaking to the other pairs on the show.

“We are dropped off (at the location) at 2pm, it was always 2pm, and not allowed to have a phone or watch with us,” Rachael told the Herald Sun.

And just how long does filming the instant restaurants take?

“Fourteen hours,” replied Roula. “The longest finished at 5am,” she said.

“You will see in an episode you might look really pretty when you arrive and at the end you have hair everywhere and you look horrible and tired. That is because we have been there so long,” she added.

Contestants are also banned from speaking to other teams off-set during filming.

“You were told you can’t talk to contestants off camera. I thought we would all be going out to dinner, but no, you would walk past each other in the lobby and be like this,” said Rachael, holding her hand up to her face.

“And when you were on a bus going to a location there would be two producers sitting with you making sure you didn’t talk. They wanted genuine, fresh conversations on camera.”

And perhaps explaining how the nasty drama escalates around the table, the Melbourne friends said during the instant restaurants contestant are “hungry, freezing, and tired”.

Bag checks of all contestants means they’re no snacking during the long wait between course.

“Some people bought lollies and they got taken out of their bag,” Rachael said

“I got a banana taken off me, I had it in my bag,” said Roula, adding, “(We were) hungry, drinking, freezing and tired. And pretty much nearly everyone in Group 1 smoked, so they were dying for cigarettes.”
