Can you guess what Australia’s favourite cook-at-home meal is?
It’s not spaghetti bolognese or roast chicken… it’s in fact, Mexican favourite tacos!
According to Coles, Australians are eating tacos at record levels. Data show sales of Mexican meal kits have increased by an average of seven per cent per year over the past five years. That’s more than triple the rate of the overall dry grocery category.
Coles revealed last year customers bought more than 1600 tonnes of tacos, burritos, enchiladas and fajiitas.
According to Google Trends data, searches for tacos overtook spaghetti and roast chicken about 18 months ago.
“We have noticed Aussie families love Mexican food, and they love Old El Paso with its popularity growing by more than 10 per cent in the past two years,” Coles chief customer officer Simon McDowell said in a statement.
