How to pick the best towel for your skin

Towels are a modern necessity for everyday life that helps us to get clean and stay warm in the process. If you have sensitive skin or just want to be caring for your skin during the colder months, then it is important to purchase towels that have a fabric that will not be coarse and rough on your body. Here are four factors that will help you get the best towel.

Size and weight

A towel’s density of fabric is measured in grams per square metre (GSM). Towels lower in GSM are lighter, thinner and usually cheaper as they wear down more quickly. These towels are best in situations such as exercising or travelling where quality isn’t as necessary. Towels which have a higher GSM are usually more expensive as they are of superior quality and will last many years. Towel quality is important because your skin and wallet will benefit from a towel that will remain at a good quality for a long period of time rather than turning rough.

Absorbency

The absorbency level is a main factor in selecting a towel as its primary purpose is to keep you dry. The absorbency of a towel is determined by the loops within the weave. The loops allow the towel to absorb water so the higher the number of loops, the more absorbent your towel will be. Be careful when adding fabric softeners to your washing as fabric softeners contain silicon which will prevent the towels absorbing water. Once a month, by adding a cup of white vinegar to your washing you can restore the absorbency to your towel. The vinegar will remove the excess fabric softener. Absorbency can also be found by the weight of the towel. Generally, the heavier the towel, the more absorbent it will be.

Amount of lint it gives off

Although new towels have their unused quality, they can she a great amount. Towels will become linty as cotton is a natural fibre that will shed when over-used and over-dried in the conventional dryer. It’s best to wash new towels in a separate washing load so the lint doesn’t go on the other towels. To avoid lint, dry your towels on the clothesline.

Softness

Softness is important when selecting your towel as it will come into so much contact with your skin. Coarse towels can irritate skin infections and will give you unpleasant experience getting clean. If you have a skin condition that is being irritated by your towel, research the various cottons that can be purchased in towels. Peruvian cotton is grown in moist and rich soil which allows the staple to be very long thus creating a soft towel. Once purchasing your towel maintain its softness with proper care.
