5 tips for gardening on the cheap

Gardening is one of those hobbies that can get quite costly, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are a few quick tips to help you save money without compromising on a beautiful garden.

1. Work with what you have

An easy way to bolster your garden is simply using what you already have in your garden. Taking cuttings and collecting seeds from existing plants is a cheap and easy way to grow more. If you’re not sure how, check out our step-by-step guide to growing plants from cuttings here.

2. Make friends who garden

When you have a community of gardeners you can help each other by exchanging plants or swapping seeds. Not only will everybody’s garden thrive with a greater variety of plants but you will all save on costs. Another way to save money is to pool money to buy seeds in bulk.

3. Recycle and reuse

You don’t have to plant flowers in expensive store-bought containers. With a little creativity you can find container options in whatever you have lying around your house. Think of planters like teacups, baskets and even an old drawer. For more creative DIY container inspiration, check out our ideas here.

4. Start a compost bin

Starting a compost bin makes long-term financial sense if you’re a regular gardener. Not only will it enrich your soil naturally, but your plants will thrive with the added nutrients. As an added bonus, you’ll feel better about throwing out your dinner scraps.

5. Look beyond nurseries to buy plants

While nurseries are an easy one-stop destination to get plants they are usually on the pricier side. Search your local paper for cheap plants or even online local classified sites like Gumtree. Alternatively wait until end of season sales to buy plants.
