How to use Pinterest to update your home

If you haven’t yet discovered the phenomenon that is Pinterest, renovation or refreshing plans for your home is the perfect time to learn a little more and start using this online pinboard to seek inspiration, organise your ideas and even find the perfect product(s) to complete your plans.

Getting started

To use Pinterest, you’ll need a Pinterest account. Once you’ve set this up, you can start creating individual “pinboards” around whatever topics you fancy. You can be as general or specific as you like. When using Pinterest for home inspiration though, it pays to be a bit more targeted in your pinning. Entering a search for “bathroom inspiration” will yield thousands of results, many of which may be nothing like what you’re interested in. Using clear, concise terms can help you find the images that you need for your planning.

Endless inspiration

Pinterest is an endless source of inspiration, which can be a mixed blessing and curse. After first discovering the site, you wouldn’t be the first person to ‘get lost’ for hours in amongst the boards, forgetting what you were looking for in the first place. By setting up boards that are specific to what you’re hoping to achieve, you can make the search for images easier with less distraction to boot! A great place to start is by deciding on a theme or general concept for the area you want to update. For example, if you’re renovating/re-doing your deck and love natural finishes, greenery and sleek furniture, try searching for images that fit that aesthetic. This gives you ideas on search terms as well as how you might refine and tie all your ideas together.

Organise your ideas

If you’re focusing on updating your lounge room for example, creating a few different boards around the primary focus is a good way to get organised. Try creating separate boards for “interiors”, “furniture”, “colour” and even “soft furnishings”. This allows you to find and sort your images accordingly and refer back to them easily. This also allows you to see how different things fit together and whether they might work in ‘real life’ outside of a computer screen.

Seek out the specifics

Once you’ve got an idea of the look you’re going for and the area of interest you want to focus on, you can use Pinterest to narrow down the specifics. Things like furniture, soft furnishings even paint shades and wallpaper are hugely abundant across thousand of boards. If you know exactly what you’re looking for (for example a specific chaise longue in a taupe fabric), try searching for that. Otherwise broaden things out a bit and see what your search yields (i.e. three seater lounge neutral fabric).

Try DIY

Pinterest is a verifiable treasure trove of DIY inspiration and step-by-steps. Whether it’s learning how to wallpaper or create a hanging herb garden, you can find it on Pinterest. If you’re searching for a project or something simple to complement your renovation or re-do plans, searching for DIY then adding in your specifics will yield a healthy number of results in a split second. Then all you need to do is sift through to find a project that suits your needs, experience level and time constraints.
