10 of the most iconic couples in history
History is full of extraordinary twosomes – some are remembered for their long-lasting romances, while others are defined by their tragic downfalls. From real life to the small and silver screens, we round up the most iconic couples in history.
1. Princess Diana and Prince Charles
Both the Prince and his young bride-to-be seriously entertained thoughts of calling off the wedding because each knew that their relationship was deeply flawed. The people’s princes and her husband allegedly stayed together because they “Didn’t want to disappoint the public”.
2. Bonnie and Clyde
It was during the Great Depression that Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went on their two-year crime spree that ended when they were both fatally shot in 1934.
3. Romeo and Juliet
Shakespeare wrote one of the most tragic love stories in history. However, it is rumoured that Romeo and Juliet was in fact based on the life of two real lovers who both died for each other and lived in Verona, Italy in 1303.
4. Micky and Minnie mouse
Not only are these two going 87 years on, but the woman who voiced Minnie, Russi Taylor, actually married the man who voiced Mickey, Wayne Allwine, in 1991. They were married until Wayne's death in 2009.
5. Barbie and Ken
Amongst a rather tumultuous career pattern, Barbie has maintained and on-off romantic relationship with her boyfriend Ken ("Ken Carson"), who first appeared in 1961. A news release from Mattel in February 2004 announced that Barbie and Ken had decided to split up, but in February 2006, they were hoping to rekindle their relationship after Ken had a makeover.
6. Antony and Cleopatra
It’s a story not unlike the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, but with the added grace of Elizabeth Taylors touch.
7. Lucy and Ricky
As a real-life couple, they created a fictional world in which Lucy was forever trying—and hilariously failing—to escape the confines of the wifely role that the 1950s and Ricky demanded of her. The marriage may not have lasted, but they were the first inter-racial couple to kiss on American television.
8. Lady and the Tramp
The 1995 Disney classic birthed the famous “Spaghetti kissing scene”, that originally took place between the two smitten pooches.
9. Kate and Will
It was the romance that re-ignited our faith in real life fairy-tales. The royal couple almost didn’t make it, when paparazzi pressure and family commitments forced the two to call in quits in 2007. We’re so glad they worked it out.
10. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe
Married in 1954, they were the first A-list celebrity couple, who’s love lived and died in the spotlight. They divorced after nine months, with the rumoured reason being because of Marilyn’s famous The Seven Year Itch pose.
