"No one told me": Woman learns of her mother's death 10 days too late

A Perth woman has been left devastated after finding out her mother died 10 days after she passed.

She only found out due to the nursing home calling her to pick up her mother's belongings from the nursing home.

Kaye Davis discovered her mum, Joyce Savage, passed away on Valentine's Day in the hospital.

Kaye said to The West Australian that she called the nursing home to visit her mother after the lockdown in Perth had ended.

She claimed that the nursing home said her mum had a "small cough".

“They told me it was ‘nothing to worry about’,” Kaye said.

“I just can’t believe it.”

Acacia Living Group Menora Gardens was where Kaye's mother was staying.

The nursing home had not told Kaye that her mother had been admitted to hospital as her mother was cared for by the Public Advocate, which manages the affairs of people not able to do it themselves.

Unfortunately, Kaye had signed over care to the nursing home after a series of back payments meant that she was late making nursing home payments.

“My poor mother died alone,” Kaye said.

“I’m just angry and upset.

“Acacia called to say can I come pick up her things, and ‘Did you know your mother died?’

“I couldn’t believe what they were saying.

“I found out she passed 10 days later ... She’s been lying in the morgue.

“No-one told me.”

Acacia Living Group said that notification of Joyce Savage's death was the responsibility of the Public Advocate's appointed legal guardian.

The Public Advocate staff said that they had tried to call Kaye Davis but had the wrong number.

“Staff were unable to reach the listed family member using the phone contact details that were provided,” Public Advocate Pauline Bagdonavicius said.

“It is most unfortunate that this has resulted in a delay in the family being notified.”

Bagdonavicius told 7NEWS that the Office of the Public Advocate would review its processes

“Following this case, Office of the Public Advocate will investigate other mechanisms to notify family in a timely manner when contact attempts are unsuccessful,” she said.

“We offer this family our sincere condolences.”
