Australians spend 7 billion dollars on fast food annually

The Heart Foundation has released figures showing that Australians are spending over seven billion dollars each year on fast food. With 28 per cent of Australia’s population are considered obese, double the number from 10 years ago, the amount spent on quick fix meals is troubling.

The average Australian will spend $311 on fast food each year. While nutritionists and doctors agree that it’s okay to treat yourself every now and again, this it shouldn’t be a regular occurrence, and that we should be balancing those splurges out with physical activity and healthy foods.

Nutritionist Adam Walsh suggests taking stairs instead of the lift or escalator, and parking the car a little further away instead of searching for the closest spot to your destination, as ways of upping your physical activity without having to think about it.

And, as always, we should all be using colourful fruits and vegetables in every meal. As an added tip, think about using fresh herbs to add flavour to your meal instead of salt.
