Coronavirus: Victoria records another 165 infections as state goes into lockdown

Victoria has recorded 165 new coronavirus cases with the state's total growing past 3,000.

Thirty of the new cases have been linked to outbreaks, with 135 currently under investigation.

40 Victorians are in hospital, including nine in intensive care.

There are also 18 new cases at the commission towers with the total at 111.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews is expected to address the media later.

Residents in Melbourne's nine quarantined public housing towers are in day 5 of "hard lockdown" with 3,000 residents completed overnight.

Those who have tested positive cannot leave their rooms.

Daily temperature checks will also be conducted for children at schools across Melbourne's locked-down zones.

More than 14,000 infra-red thermometers will be sent to public, Catholic and independent schools as well as being sent to early childhood education and care services.

Education Minister James Merlino said that the daily checks would "help make sure unwell students stay at home and do not risk spreading coronavirus".

“I understand that this is a stressful time for parents, but we are following the best medical advice and taking every possible precaution to ensure the safety of all Victorians,” he said.

Children who attend a school in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire will have an extra week of holidays if they're in prep to year 10.
