Amazing footage of orcas rubbing their bellies on stones in shallow water

In a display unique to the area, a group of wild orcas has been filmed gently rubbing their bellies on smooth stones in the shallow waters off Vancouver Island, Canada.

The video, which appeared online at the end of January, was recorded by Chris Wilton, a local builder, when he heard the whales at Bates Beach.

According to Wilton, “there were four or five orcas coming in and out of the beach and swimming right ashore within six feet of us.”

The resident orcas, also known as killer whales, are famous for this behaviour, but scientists are still unsure why they do it.
