Shock as Prince Frederick rushed to hospital

Crown Prince Frederik has undergone surgery after sustaining an injury from a skiing accident in Switzerland.

The 51-year-old was taken back to the Danish capital of Copenhagen for surgery alongside Crown Princess Mary who didn’t leave her husband’s side.

The Danish Palace has confirmed the news in an official statement.

"His Royal Highness The Crown Prince suffered a minor injury in the left shoulder last week in connection with skiing in Switzerland," the Palace's statement read.

"The Crown Prince has therefore today been examined and treated at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen," it added.

"The treatment consisted of an uncomplicated operation, which proceeded according to plan. The shoulder injury does not affect the Crown Prince's official program."

For fans of Prince Frederik and Princess Mary, the news of Frederik being injured in a skiing accident comes as no surprise. The future Danish King and his family are avid skiers and have currently been living in a ski resort town of Verbier.

This is due to Prince Frederik and Princess Mary’s four children attend the Lamania-Verbier International School for a 12 week spring term.

Prince Christian, 14, Princess Isabella, 12 and eight-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine are attending boarding school to experience an international learning culture as the children usually attend a school in Denmark.

It’s also not the first time Prince Frederik has injured himself either, as he was forced to pull out of the 10km Royal Run last year in May due to a slipped disk.

"I have had a few back problems lately which have stopped me from going running as I would like to," Prince Frederik said in a video statement at the time.
