A three-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car in Melbourne on Thursday night.

The toddler ran into traffic when he was hit by a red sedan that failed to stop at the scene on McIntyre Road in Sunshine North, in the city’s northwest, around 6.30pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and took the boy to hospital where he tragically died overnight.

“These kind of collisions, sometimes they bring out the worst and the best in people,” Detective Acting Sergeant Leigh Miller said.

“In this case, you have the driver of a car for unknown reasons, they have failed to stop and help this child.

“I can just only hope they didn't know that it was a child, but if they did, what else can we say about them?'

Victoria Police are appealing for any witnesses to come and for the driver to hand themselves in.

“Investigators are appealing for anyone with information and the driver to come forward and contact police,' they said.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam footage or any other information that could assist police with their enquiries is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.”
