Why Prince Charles might not be King Charles
When the Prince of Wales eventually succeeds his mother to the British throne, there is a chance that he might opt to use another name in his new position rather than Charles.
The Queen ‘s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter, who wrote the book On Duty with the Queen, has revealed that Charles may choose one of his middle names for his official title when he is crowned king.
In an interview with Hello magazine, Mr Arbiter said: “He might choose one of his other names Philip, Arthur or George.”
Charles would join a long list of his royal ancestors who also opted to change their names once they ascended the throne.
Charles’s maternal grandfather Albert Frederick Arthur George, known to his family as ‘Bertie’, chose to go by King George VI in honour of his late father.
King Edward VII’s first name was Albert, but chose his second name, Edward.
Charles will also gain other significant titles, including the Duke of Lancaster, Defender of the Faith, Supreme Governor of the Church of England, Head of the Commonwealth, and King of other Realms and Territories.
“[Charles will] also be Lord of the Man (Isle of Man) and Duke of Normandy,” Mr Arbiter said.
“But generally he’ll only be known as King.”
Mr Arbiter also believes Camilla will become Queen Consort when her husband becomes King.
Mr Arbiter shared that he thinks Camilla will be a good support to Charles, because of her “sense of fun and humour”.
The title Camilla will receive when Charles become King has been long debated since the pair married in 2005, with Clarence House maintaining it is “intended” she will be known as “Princess Consort”.
However, royal insiders have reportedly said that Charles wants to see her receive the title of Queen Consort.
Earlier this year, Clarence House and Buckingham Palace removed any mention of her possible titles from their official websites.
“This is one question that Clarence House has not been asked by the public for some time, which is why it no longer features,” a spokesman said at the time.
