Sad end in search for overboard cruise passenger

A body has been found in the search for a missing passenger who was reported overboard in waters off the coast of Sydney.

An alarm was raised onboard P&O’s Pacific Adventure cruise ship around 4am on Monday morning to alert the crew that a passenger had gone overboard.

The alarm prompted a search and rescue operation about 10 nautical miles (18.5km) off Sydney Heads, with the crew from the ship also aiding in the rescue instead of docking in Sydney Harbour.

Police said the search effort was made difficult due to rough conditions, with crews facing swells up to 5m and 50 to 60km/h winds.

It was then confirmed at 10:30am that the body of a man was located in the water and retrieved.

A P&O spokesperson then added that the Pacific Adventure, which was carrying 2,600 passengers, has been cleared by police to return to port.

“We thank guests for their care, understanding and patience on what’s been a distressing day for guests and crew,” they said.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the guest at this difficult time.”

Passengers on board the ship described the atmosphere as “tense” and “very sombre” as search efforts unfolded.

Police have launched an investigation into the death and will prepare a report for the coroner.
