7 tips to get a cruise cabin upgrade

There isn’t a traveller on the planet who hasn’t tried for an upgrade – and cruise ships are the perfect opportunity to score one. Once the ship leaves port, there are likely a number of high roller suites that have been left unfilled. Here’s how to nab one.

1. It’s all about timing

Book early on and outside peak times – which are outside school holidays, Christmas/ Easter and during the mid-week.

2. Buy other extras

Booking a few additional services and shore excursions is sure to get you noticed, and you could be rewarded.

3. Become a member

Loyalty members, cruise club members and newsletter subscribers will be first on the list for an upgrade.

4. Be assertive

There’s never a need to be rude or aggressive, but sometimes a whisper in the right ear about how you can hear the engines in your cabin, won’t go astray.

5. Be agreeable

A few well-placed words complimenting the check-in staff on their nail extensions can open doors – literally.

6. Look out for special offers

Lots of cruise lines offer larger cabins in higher classes if you travel in a quad. But make sure you regularly check out deals because many lines will offer a free cabin upgrade or for a much reduced price when you book the deal.

7.  Book a guaranteed stateroom

While it might be a bit of a gamble, booking a guaranteed stateroom means you will get the lowest price for a cabin category of your choosing However, you don’t get to pick the cabin. If your cabin class fills out (which is common for standard cabins), you may get upgraded to the next category up.

However, members of loyalty programs and previous passengers have a better chance of this.
