WA cruise passengers can now gamble onboard

The Government of Western Australia has announced cruise ship restrictions regarding gambling and the serving of alcoholic beverages have been lifted.

WA Premier Colin Barnett has confirmed gaming floors would now be able to be opened when cruise ships are travelling between WA ports or within 12 nautical miles of the coast. The changes been WA in line with the status quo around Australia.

Premier Barnett hopes the changes will make WA more appealing for cruise ships, telling WA Today, “Cruise ships are crucial to growing the state's tourism industry. Cruise companies generate more than $275 million for the local economy.”

In addition to the gaming changes, tourism businesses will no longer need a liquor license to supply alcoholic beverages to visitors who are taking tours.

Racing and Gaming Minister Colin Holt told WA Today, “This has placed restrictions on tourism operators from providing customers with a beer or wine while watching the sun set, or sitting around a campfire at the end of an adventure tour.”
