Do you really need to carry your licence while driving?

Driving in Australia can be difficult at the best of times, and if you’re touring around the country the variances in road rules from state to state can be a read head-scratcher.

One of the most commonly-asked (and misunderstood) questions in Australian driving is whether you’re required to have your licence on you while you’re driving. The answer is complicated, and depends on the state you’re driving in.

In some states you can be immediately issued with a fine for not carrying a driver’s licence in a vehicle, while in others you’re fine to hit the road without it.

But what rules apply where? Well, so you don’t get a surprise on your next road trip around the country, we’ve provided a state-by-state summary of the licence carrying requirements for drivers. To see the parts of Australia where you’re required to hold a driver’s licence by driving, scroll through the gallery above.
