If you thought last week was hot, it's not over yet
The heatwaves last week that saw new November temperature records reached may have abated – for the minute.
The mercury is set to soar into the mid- to late-30s again in southern Australia.
A projected high of 34C in Melbourne on Thursday would be hotter than any day during last week’s heatwave or during the month of November.
On Friday, the first official day of summer, Sydney could reach 29C, a full 6C warmer than any day in the past month. The Harbour City looks set to experience its warmest November week in nearly 50 years.
Canberra and Hobart are set to reach 30C on Friday and Saturday, and Perth could get as high as 36C this coming weekend.
Adelaide will be the first city to feel the heat with a high of 35C predicted on Tuesday, followed by 36C on Wednesday, which is more than 10C hotter than an average November day.
Jenny Horvat, a duty forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology in Adelaide, said the state was in a cycle of hot days followed by colder weather.
“These high pressures systems move off and then a new one comes in and sits there, with a cool front between the two,” she said.
“The current high pressure system is in the Great Australian Bight and is looking like it will move out to the east. Winds could then turn northerly bringing warmer air from inland Australia into Adelaide.”
However, the heatwave hasn’t just arrived yet. In fact, a series of thunderstorms is working its way up the Victoria and NSW interior right now. But get ready for a hot one this weekend.
