How to stay warm when camping in winter

Crowding around a crackling fire with a hot cuppa in hand while taking in the invigorating crisp air makes camping in winter well worth the effort. However, there’s one undeniable fact: being cold is an utterly miserable experience. Nobody sets out to shiver in a tent but if you’re unprepared for the temps you might be caught out. Here’s our top tips to help you stay warm while winter camping.

Get active – It’s no secret that moving your body gets the heart pumping and your body temperature up. If you wake up to the cold, take a brief but fast walk around the campsite or simply star jump (or some other type of move) on the spot to increase blood circulation.

Layer up – A good rule of thumb for clothing is the three-layer rule – a base, middle and outer layer. For the base, choose a fabric like merino wool that dries quickly and wicks moisture to the outer layers when evaporated. Choose down or fleece for the middle layer as it should serve as insulation to retain body heart. Finally, your outer layer should be waterproof, windproof and well-ventilated. Avoid cotton clothes as it takes a long time to dry and loses its insulating quality once it gets wet, even from sweat.

Right sleeping bag – When it comes to bedding, choosing the right sleeping bag for the conditions is paramount, especially if you feel the cold easily at night. It doesn’t mean you have to get a sleeping bag for Artic conditions (unless you’re planning to camp in the Artic) but do your homework. Take note of temperature ratings – if you want to keep warm, purchase one that is for temps 6 degrees colder than the temperature you plan to camp in.

Use an insulating sleeping mat – Studies show that what you have under you is more important that what’s on top of you in keeping warm.

Eat plenty of snacks – Your body expends energy to keep warm so it’s important to keep hydrated and not to skimp on the meals. Choose foods packed with protein and if you’re backpacking in the day, make sure you nibble on plenty of snacks.
