Why it costs so much to fly in and out of Canberra

If you’ve spent a little bit of time flying in and out of the ACT in the past, you might have noticed that flights to Canberra typically cost more than those to other capital cities.

But why is this the case?

Well, there are a handful of factors pushing domestic airfares to Canberra up.

1. Shorter flights cost more per kilometre

Part of what drives costs flights from Melbourne and Sydney to the ACT up is the short distance, making the cost per kilometre for operating the plane high.

2. The mix of passengers on the flight

Flights to Canberra are typically taken by business and government interests, so there’s less of an incentive to create a sale to attract any holidaymakers.

3. Popularity of the route

The fact that Canberra is one of the most popular routes in Australia also drives prices up, as airline can always rely on the customer demand to cover costs.

4. Lack of airlines

With Canberra flights dominated by Qantas and Virgin, there just isn’t the competition for prices there.

Have you noticed how high prices for flights to Canberra are?
