Kate Langbroek reveals the touching reason she moved her family of six to Italy

Kate Langbroek has revealed the touching reason behind her decision to move her family of six from Melbourne to Bologna, Italy.

Speaking to Tommy Little on The Sunday Project, the radio presenter said she wanted to “have an adventure” with her family.

The 53-year-old said the health battle that her eldest son Lewis went through made her realise how short and precious life is.

“Our eldest son Lewis, who’s 15 now, and healthy and beautiful, had leukaemia when he was six, and was in treatment for four years, and nearly died. For so long we couldn’t go anywhere, we couldn’t travel anywhere – I mean we went to the hospital, we went home,” she said.

“There seemed something really life-affirming about having an adventure together as a family.”

Lewis was given the all-clear in 2013. After a year of planning, Langbroek and her husband Peter Allen Lewis moved to the European country earlier this year with their four children: Lewis, 15, Sunday, 14, Artie, 12 and Jan, nine.

In an interview with Stellar, Langbroek said her children did not have a say in the decision. She said it is “the way we operate as a family — the children calling the shots doesn’t really happen. There’s so many of us we can’t afford to do that.”

Nevertheless, Langbroek said life in Italy has been good for her and her family.

“Italians are very relaxed people… Life revolves around having something nice to eat, having a rest, enjoying what you’re doing, your family, and enjoying the beauty around you. That’s really it,” she said.

“On a good day, the kids get to stop at the gelato or the crepe shop. They’re working their way through all the gelato flavours.”

The mother-of-four is now doing her Hit Network show Hughesy & Kate from a makeshift studio in Bologna.
