You’ve been missing out on Australia’s biggest airport perk

Travellers have been missing out on Australia’s biggest airport perk. This simple yet widely-unknown government initiative that could see you make money at the airport.

The Government’s Tourist Refund schemes means that if you’re travelling overseas but stop at a local regular retail store beforehand, you can claim a GST refund at the airport or cruise liner terminal which is your final port of departure.

This refund only applies to any items you are wearing on the plane or are stowed in your carry-on luggage, and excludes most forms of liquors (with wine the one exception).

You’re allowed to claim on items purchased up to 60 days prior to departure with a value of $300 or more, although any claim submitted must include a tax invoice.

To make your claim, simply head to one of the TRS facilities with your passport and boarding pass up to 30 minutes before your flight departs. These facilities are generally located beyond Customs and Immigration at international terminals.

For more information see border.gov.au.
