4 major signs pickpockets look for when choosing a target
Stay one step ahead of the crooks on the road.
1. Dressing like a ‘tourist’
You know the type – they are decked out in a brand new ‘I Heart NY’ tshirt and matching cap or are wearing all the new high tech travel gear they bought just for this trip (complete with the zip off pants). Would you dress like this at home? If the answer is no, then you may want to rethink the outfit. Pickpockets will be on the lookout for people who are obviously tourists, so try to blend in and dress as inconspicuously as possible.
2. Wearing all your valuables
When you’re travelling, leave the flashy diamonds and expensive watches at home. They are instant giveaways that you have money and are carrying something worth stealing. If you really must wear jewellery, keep it simple. You also don’t want to carry a big, expensive camera around your neck unless you are absolutely sure you aren’t in a dodgy area. Invest in a smaller one that can fit in your pocket – the new breed of digital cameras still take great pics.
3. Looking nervous or lost
When travelling, confidence is key. Even if you are feeling uncomfortably or a little intimidated, try not to show it as it will make you look like an easy target. If you are clearly lost, standing around looking at a map or your phone, a pickpocket will instantly mark you out as a tourist. If you need to regroup and find out where you are, it’s a good idea to go into a café and get away from the crowds on the street.
4. Being too drunk
This is a bad idea for a number of reasons, but walking through the streets when you are obviously impaired is almost an open invitation for someone to snatch your bag or wallet. Be sensible, keep your head and, if in doubt, take a taxi.
