Aussie city facing record mozzie outbreak this summer
Residents of a major Australian city have been warned to brace themselves for mosquitos this summer, with record numbers of mozzies expected to swarm.
Experts are expecting Sydney to cop an onslaught of mosquitos over the course of summer, with the pesky little blood suckers expected to converge upon the harbour city.
Dr Cameron Webb, Medical Entomologist at University of Sydney and NSW Health Pathology, told 9 News, “The mosquitoes are waiting in our wetlands.”
With a wet summer forecast, Dr Webb advises all Sydney residents should be extra careful and take necessary preventative measures to reduce the impact.
Dr Webb’s tips include:
- Wearing lighter coloured clothing, as mosquitos are attracted to dark colours.
- Wearing closed toe shoes instead of thongs.
- Avoiding being outside in the later afternoon and early evening.
- Using repellents containing diethyltoluamide (DEET), picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oils.
