Flight attendant reveals gross truth about plane food

When you’re on a long-haul flight, the meals are sometimes a bit of a highlight in an otherwise fairly uneventful stream of time.

Despite being either bland or rather salty (and what’s with those stale bread rolls?) most people tuck in oblivious to what lurks upon those foil wrapped trays.

A user named Shreyas P. answered a thread on Quora about airline food. Claiming to have worked for five major airlines, Shreyas suggested that savvy staff and customers bring their own food on board.

“The food on your tray is prepared not in the galley but in the aircraft catering,” Shreyas wrote, “which is often done 12 hours before and even days before the aircraft departure.

“Now, how many such industries do you know where the hot or cold meal was made days before you consume it?

“That cut fruit which is on your tray still looks fresh, and how is that possible when it was cut hours before the departure, have you ever wondered?”

No we haven’t ever wondered about it, Shreyas, but we certainly do now.

It’s not just the fruit we should be wary of, with Shreyas warning that anything containing eggs should be a no-no.

“The scrambled egg or the omelet that you just had was not only egg but can be a mix of egg and other substitute,” Shreyas revealed.

As if it’s not enough that we are eating Frankenstein-eggs, there are also loads of additives that are put on the food to make it taste better in the air. Think extra fats, more spice and of course more salt.

“Most of us aren’t aware of this, but in addition to making your ears pop, it causes our tastebuds and sense of smell to go partially numb, compared to on ground” and “has major impact on how food tastes and smells.”

Does this change things for you? Are you going to bring your own meals on board next time you fly? Tell us in the comments below.
