Travel expert’s tips for your best solo trip ever

Liz Young has worked in the travel industry for over 35 years and travelled solo many times over the years both for work and leisure. This year she launched Individual Traveller, a bespoke travel service designed for men and women 45+ to travel with other solo travellers who’d like the opportunity to get together at the end of the day to share their experiences.

  1. Plan ahead – Book your trip in advance with a good travel agent so you can maximise your time away and not spend wasted holiday time sitting on your hotel bed deciding what to do.
  2. Pack light – You will enjoy your trip much better without all the baggage!
  3. Let people know where you’re going – Make sure someone knows where you are at all times. Give your family or friends your itinerary and check in with them regularly.
  4. Make copies of all important documents – Remember to make copies of your passport, driver’s licence, credit cards and keep them in a safe in your room
  5. Prepare for an emergency – Carry a spare credit card and keep this in the safe in your room so you have emergency access to funds if needed.
  6. Meet locals – Start a conversation with a stranger and connect with the locals in the area.
  7. Be open to new experiences – Don’t get bogged down worrying about travelling solo so you that you forget to enjoy the experience. Life’s an adventure, have some fun!
  8. Mix with others – Connect with other travellers who will be able to share their tips and advice. Who knows, they might become lifelong friends!
  9. Trusts your instincts – Listen to your gut. If something doesn’t feel right, leave or don’t do it.
  10. Make sure you enjoy the night life – Most solo travellers have plenty to do during the day, sightseeing or exploring the area, but at night you see people sitting in a restaurant by themselves or they choose to stay in their room and miss out on the night life. Make sure you go out and experience what your destination’s night life has to offer! If you don’t want to explore the night alone, Individual Traveller offers bespoke travel itineraries designed for solo travellers who enjoy their independence but like to socialise and meet new people. We give you the opportunity to meet at the end of the day for a drink with your fellow travellers and it’s up to you to decide what your plans will be for that night!
