Former premier's emotional farewell after wife's sudden passing

Helena Carr, the wife of former foreign minister and NSW premier Bob Carr, has been bid an emotional farewell at Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral after passing away last month in Vienna.

The 77-year-old lost consciousness due to a brain aneurysm while on a trip with her husband. In a tearful eulogy, Bob Carr shared the raw pain of losing his beloved wife of 50 years, known affectionately to him as "H".

Reflecting on their enduring partnership, Carr acknowledged the acceptance that their time together was not infinite. He described the calmness and wisdom they found, emphasising the joy they took in each other's happiness.

"We seemed to be at peace in our 50-year partnership," he said. "We accepted without admitting it that our time would not be forever. We were in a resting place that meant we were happy to see the other one happy. No partner could have smiled more than she did.

"As we walked across Vienna having fun on that last day, that was where our 50-year journey had taken us: to a kind of calmness and wisdom where it ended so suddenly, so cruelly cut off.

“We are such stuff that dreams are made of, and our light rounded off with a sleep. That left me to say, my friend, as co-conspirator in this half-century collaboration, thank you my lucky star, my little friend.”

In addition to being a supportive partner, Helena was recognised as an accomplished businesswoman who played a crucial role in her husband's political career. Born in Malaysia, she took over the security division producing postage stamps at Australia Post in 1984. Bob Carr praised her multifaceted contributions to their marriage, portraying her as "CEO, CFO, the chief strategist and the financial planner – which left me to be the entertainment director”.

Carr reminisced about his wife's pivotal role in his political campaigns, showcasing her love for the play, humour, and personality of politics. He emphasised her ability to connect with colleagues and her integral part in the human comedy that brought smiles to those around her.

In a touching revelation, Carr recalled a moment in 1971 when his wife declared him her "lucky star" after watching a film. However, he corrected the sentiment at the funeral, stating that Helena was, in fact, his lucky star.

Education Minister Jason Clare conveyed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's tribute, describing Helena as the "steel in Bob's back" and "whip smart".

The requiem mass, presided over by Father Frank Brennan SJ AO, celebrated Helena as a "peacemaker" who never sought the limelight. Political figures, including NSW Premier Chris Minns, deputy premier Prue Car, former prime ministers Malcolm Turnbull and Paul Keating, and federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek, paid their respects at the ceremony.

Helena Carr's passing marked the end of a remarkable journey that began when she emigrated to Australia to study economics at The University of Sydney. Meeting Bob Carr in Tahiti in 1971, the couple forged a partnership that lasted half a century. Despite the deep sorrow, Bob found a reason to carry on – for her.

Images: Supplied

Dutton not ruling out legal action against “bizarre” Bob Carr

Defence minister Peter Dutton has slammed former NSW premier Bob Carr, who has claimed Dutton is the one behind the Liberal Party's texting scandal.

The series of texts were leaked to Network Ten's Peter van Onselen, as the texts were reportedly exchanged between Peter Dutton and Gladys Berejiklian during the 2019-2020 Australian bushfire crisis.

In the messages, Gladys refers to Prime Minister Scott Morrison as a "horrible, horrible person", with the response from Dutton, according to Carr, called the PM a "complete psycho".

Bob Carr broke the news on Twitter, saying he knows that Dutton is the one who broke the story to the media and gave permission for news outlets to use the texts.

He said, "The minister who shared the text with van Onselen and gave permission to use it was Peter Dutton. If PM Morrison has one more week in free fall the prospect of a leadership change pre-election is real."

"Party rules don’t count if most MPs think you will lead them to defeat."

The minister who shared the text with van Onselen and gave permission to use it was Peter Dutton. He was really dashing..,” she said.

During a conversation at the Cheltenham Literary Festival, the actress noted she has photographs of the couple together.

While they didn’t last together as a couple, as Princess Margaret would go on to marry and then divorce Antony Armstrong Jones, the royal and her uncle maintained a close relationship.

Princess Margaret with Mark Bonham carter at the February 1954 premiere of Kiss Me Kate.

"[They] remained good friends," she said, per The Sun. "It's weird, I basically went out with my uncle."

Bonham Carter has proven to be a dedicated actress, and opened up about her unique methods to prepare for her role on The Crown.

The actress admitted she communicated with Princess Margaret from beyond the grave through a psychic, as well as using more traditional methods by speaking to several of the late royal’s ladies-in-waiting, and her hairdresser.

"They spent hours talking about her, mainly because they loved her," Bonham Carter said. Helena Bonham Carter uses psychic to contact Princess Margaret for acting tips from beyond the grave

Actress Helena Bonham Carter has revealed that she’s reached out to Princess Margaret via a psychic to ask for her permission to play her in Netflix’s show The Crown.

Princess Margaret passed away at the age of 71 back in 2002, so Bonham Carter thought that it would only be right to reach out and get permission before she went forth playing the lady herself.

“She said, apparently, she was glad it was me,” Bonham Carter, 53, revealed at a sold-out session at the Cheltenham Literary Festival on October 5.

“When you play someone real, you really want their blessing because you do have a responsibility.

“I asked her, ‘Are you OK with me playing you?’ And she said, ‘You’re better than the other actress that they were thinking of.’

“That made me think maybe she is here because it’s a really classic Margaret thing to say – she is really good at complimenting you and putting you down at the same time.”

Reaching out to someone from beyond the grave is nothing new for Bonham Carter as she always talks to a psychic when playing a real person who has passed away.

The Queen’s younger sister also included some rules for Bonham Carter to follow.

She said, “You’re going to have to brush up and be more groomed and neater.”

Bonham Carter has been excited to play the role for a while, as Princess Margaret is known in a “one dimensional” way by the public.

“Everyone has such a particular idea of Margaret. It’s very daunting and I don’t really look like her,” she told The Telegraph in December 2018.

“But like the Queen, no one really knows what they’re like privately, so you can make your own choices.”

She also confirmed that she researched for the role by talking to people who knew her closely, including relatives and three former ladies-in-waiting.

“They really loved her, and when you go to the inner circle of people … they were very happy to talk about her because they miss her,” she said.

“I felt very lucky to suddenly be the receptacle of all these stories. I think, for a lot of the friends, they are so tired with her being portrayed in a one-dimensional, very bitchy understanding of her.”

Helena Broadbent’s final call to triple zero before fatal fall from car

32-year-old Helena Broadbent was on a phone call to triple zero when she fell out of her partner’s car.

35-year-old William Wilson has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after his partner Broadbent fell out of a Mitsubishi Triton in Melbourne on Saturday and died in hospital following a caesarean delivery.

Police told Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday that Wilson allegedly had an argument with Broadbent at their home at Keilor Downs.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Out said Broadbent called triple zero, saying Wilson was threatening to kill her with a hammer.

Believing police were on the way, Wilson took several items from the home and left in the vehicle, where Broadbent was attempting to retrieve the two child seats.

Wilson drove off with Broadbent still in the vehicle and on the phone to triple zero, the court heard.

Police said Broadbent could be heard saying “he’s going to take off with the kids’ seats” before “a scream, then silence” followed.

Sergeant Out said Broadbent fell from the back seat onto the road as Wilson made a right turn, hitting her head on the pavement.

“Investigators believe the accused ought to have known Ms Broadbent was at risk of being seriously injured while driving the car, with her being in proximity, and should not have driven further once she had opened the door,” Sergeant Out said.

Broadbent “suffered a catastrophic brain injury” and was sent to a hospital, but died after delivering her baby.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg said of Wilson, “He must have known in my view that she was inside the car and certainly he knew she was trying to get the seat out for the children.

“It shows disregard not only for her but his own children.

“It is a strong case for the prosecution and if convicted the accused can expect to receive a long period of imprisonment.”

The Magistrate rejected the bail request from Wilson’s lawyer, saying the Melbourne man was facing a “serious charge” and that “there is no compelling reason why his detention is not justified”.

Wilson is set to appear in court again on January 6.

According to the ABC, Australian police deal with 5,000 domestic violence cases on average every week, or about one every two minutes.

On average, one woman is murdered by her current of former partner every week, the Australian Institute of Criminology reported.
