The young man who jumped overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise has been identified as 20-year-old Levion Parker.

Parker, a former high school footballer from Florida, was onboard the Liberty of the Seas with his family when the incident occurred, as the vessel was making its way back to the US after a four-day cruise to the Dominican Republic.

The ship was reportedly about 90km off the southern most island of the Bahamas when the young man, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, jumped overboard in the early hours of the morning.

Witnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing how a young man took a spontaneous plunge from one of the ship's decks, despite the desperate pleas and helplessness of his father and brother who stood witness to the impulsive act.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told news.com.au the ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who took over the search.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share,” the spokesperson said on Monday.

Fellow travellers on the cruise were alerted to the tragedy during breakfast a few hours later, as many stood along balconies starring into the sea in the hopes of finding the man.

A passenger took to Reddit to post about the heartbreaking incident said they became aware of the tragedy when the captain "announced it over the PA system while we were at breakfast and the entire room went silent.”

Levion’s father Francel Parker, who owns an air-conditioning business, was invited, together with his family, aboard the ship as guests of Florida-based air-conditioning wholesalers Tropic Supply to mark the company’s 50th anniversary.

The US Coast Guard has suspended its search for the missing young man.

9/11 victim’s remains identified nearly 23 years after terror attack

Almost 23 years on from the deadly attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York, a victim’s remains have been identified.

John Ballantine Niven, 44, was an executive at Aon Risk Services, an insurance firm on the 105th floor of Tower Two of the Trade Centre complex in September 2001.

Niven is the 1,650th victim identified from the deadliest act of terrorism on American soil, when hijackers crashed planes into the Twin Towers, killing 2,753 people on September 11th.

At the time of his death, he left behind a wife and an 18-month-old son, with his body remaining unidentified until now.

“While the pain from the enormous losses on September 11th never leaves us, the possibility of new identifications can offer solace to the families of victims,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement.

“I’m grateful for the ongoing work from the Office of Chief Medical Examiner that honours the memory of John Ballantine Niven and all those we lost.”

In recent years, the medical examiner’s office has been utilising modern advanced DNA technology to identify victims through their remains.

“We will forever remember our heroes who perished on 9/11 and we appreciate the continuous efforts of forensic experts to help identify victims,” Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said in a separate statement.

“We’re hopeful that this amazing advance in technology helps bring peace to Niven’s family and allows him to eternally rest in peace.”

Roughly 40 percent of victims of the World Trade Centre attack have yet to have their remains identified, as few full bodies were recovered when the towers collapsed.

Image credits: Getty Images / legacy.com

Manhunt as two men who fled scene of fatal car crash identified

The young victims of a deadly crash crash have been identified, as police continue their search for two men who fled the scene.

Braydan Collier, 13, and Kaine Bell, 14, were killed after a silver Ford sedan slammed into a telegraph pole and a jacaranda tree in Ashcroft, western Sydney, at high speed on Monday, splitting the vehicle in two and throwing one of the young boys from the car.

Braydan had just celebrated his 13th birthday on Sunday, the day before he and his best mate would be killed in the horrifying crash.

The two men, one of whom was driving the car, abandoned the scene, prompting a major manhunt from police.

The men are claimed by police to be Nicholas Thew and Anthony Morris, according to report from The Daily Telegraph.

Graphic CCTV footage of the accident captured the moment two adult men, who, the publication reports “played surrogate big brother roles” in their lives, pulled themselves from the wreckage of the car, stepped over the boys’ bodies and fled the scene.

One of the men could be heard yelling to his fellow front seat passenger “I wanna go home” as they ran, leaving the teenagers behind, who died at the scene.

Nicholas Thew’s younger brother Dridyn told The Telegraph his family was horrified by the accident.

He said he and his mother had taken the young victims “under their wing”.

“Mum’s more worried about the two little boys, she tried to take them under her wing, she took Kaine and Braydan under her wing even though she struggles herself,” he said.

“They’re little ones I took under my wing to keep out of trouble, but I haven’t seen them for two days and look where they are now."

“My younger brother went around there and identified them. Slain St Andrew’s staffer identified

The body of a female staff member at St Andrew’s College in Sydney has been identified, just hours after she was found dead in the school’s gymnasium.

Lilie James, 21, was the water polo coach at the prestigious school, and was found dead with serious head injuries just before midnight on Wednesday.

Police are continuing their investigation into her alleged murder, while also searching for Ms James’ friend and colleague Paul Thijssen.

Mr Thijssen, who is also a sports coach at the college, is wanted for questioning by police, as it is believed he could help with inquiries into her “apparent” homicide.

On Thursday morning, police established a second crime scene near The Gap in Vaucluse that they believe is linked to Ms James’ death.

Superintendent Martin Fileman said, “We don’t want to make any assumptions of the fact that that person may have taken his own life, but that’s just another line of inquiry we’re looking at at the moment.”

Fileman also confirmed that the two school staffers were known to each other, saying, “There’s nothing to indicate that there was any domestic violence, any [apprehended violence orders] or anything between both of them,” he said.

A post-mortem examination has yet to be conducted to formally determine the cause of the woman’s death.

“From her injuries, it was apparent that she was a victim of homicide,” Fileman said.

“As you can probably imagine, it’s an extremely daunting experience, a very sad time for everybody. Not only the families, the students also who are turning up today to be confronted by this.”

The grim discovery was made after emergency services were called to the scene following reports of concern for the woman's welfare.

The Superintendent went on to say the crime scene at the elite school was "confronting" for the officers who found the body.

"Last night police from Sydney city police area command were responding to a welfare check and attended the school at St Andrew's cathedral where police located the body of a female in her early 20s in the gym area of the school," he said.

"From her injuries it was apparent she was a victim of a homicide.”

"It feels like losing her all over again": Missing woman's remains identified

Human remains discovered in a grassland area in New South Wales have been positively identified as those belonging to Samah Baker, a victim of a tragic murder.

The individual responsible for her murder, James Hachem, who had an intermittent relationship with her, was convicted last year for the crime that occurred in January 2019. He was subsequently handed a 24-year prison sentence in May of this year.

The recent discovery, made on July 28th, involved a woman stumbling upon the remains approximately 100 metres to the south of the Windellama Overpass in Goulburn.

Law enforcement officials have now officially confirmed the identity of these remains as belonging to Samah Baker.

The Baker family, in response to this development, released a statement expressing the persistent anguish they have endured since Samah's untimely death.

While the identification of her remains offers some solace after four-and-a-half years, it doesn't provide a complete sense of closure. The family highlighted how each new twist in the case exacerbates the wounds that have barely started healing, serving as a stark reminder of their profound loss. The statement poignantly conveys the feeling that even though her physical remains have been located, it evokes the sensation of losing her all over again.

Samah, a 30-year-old resident of Sydney, had been engaged in a tumultuous and occasionally violent relationship with Hachem, who was 37 years old, ever since their initial encounter at work in 2015.

Despite numerous breakups, Baker eventually moved on and found a new partner in December 2018. The court proceedings unveiled that Hachem had obsessively watched Baker, even waiting outside her apartment and growing increasingly furious when he observed her with her new partner on the early morning of January 4.

He concocted a ruse involving a fabricated story about his parents being in a car accident to lure Baker out of her apartment before committing the heinous act.

Hachem's premeditation extended to purchasing materials, such as a double sheet, gloves, cleaning supplies and a digging trowel from a Bunnings store, before embarking on a journey to remote regions in rural New South Wales. At the time of Hachem's sentencing, Baker's body had not yet been discovered, compounding the grief experienced by her family and friends.

The full statement from the Baker family reads:

"On Friday 4 January 2019, Samah was taken away from us in the cruellest way.

"In the years that followed, our grief has been compounded by the fact that we have not been able to have a funeral or lay her to rest.

"We never got to say goodbye to her or tell her we loved her for the last time.

"The news of her remains being discovered four and a half years later isn't a neat resolution, but it does offer a small measure of what we've been longing for all this time.

"Each development in the case feels like a reopening of our barely healed wounds, reminding us of the harsh reality of our loss.

"Even though what remains of Samah has been found, it feels like losing her all over again.

We ask for privacy in dealing with our grief."

Images: PR Handout / Facebook

"Their memories will live on forever": Tragic twist as young brothers lost in car crash identified

Two young lives were tragically cut short in a devastating car crash in the southern part of Sydney. The victims, young brothers Xavier and Peter Abreu, aged ten and nine, are being remembered for their innocence and vibrancy as the community mourns their loss. The incident occurred on Friday night August 25 when the Subaru WRX they were travelling in collided with a tree along Grand Parade in Monterey at approximately 9:50pm.

The boys' relative, Jimmy Martin Brito, 33, who was also driving the vehicle and is the father of a nine-year-old girl who was a passenger and sustained minor injuries, has been taken into custody and charged in connection to the incident. He faces charges including two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count of causing bodily harm by misconduct.

In the wake of this tragic event, the boys' stepmother, Jivonne Garrido, has established a fundraising campaign to support the grieving family. She expressed in a GoFundMe post on Sunday that while the boys' lives were tragically cut short, their memories will forever remain with the family.

"The beautiful boys lost their lives in tragic circumstances however their memories will live on forever with the family Father Samuel Mother Olivia, brothers Alex and Jacob along with Auntie Joanne and Grandmother Dimitria."

"We thank everyone who has already shown the size of their hearts with heartfelt messages and flowers at the site and call for assistance from the public that this event may resonate with. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

The legal proceedings surrounding the incident have begun, with police alleging that Brito was operating the vehicle recklessly, leading to the fatal crash. Brito was expected to appear in court for a hearing, but it was adjourned due to his ongoing recovery from injuries sustained in the crash. His defence lawyer, Fahim Arya, conveyed that his client has had limited communication with his sister, the mother of the two boys who passed away while he was in the hospital. Despite her distress, the mother is reportedly standing by Brito.

Mr Arya said the mother was 'distraught and distressed' but 'still supports and stands by him.' He added that Brito was 'fresh out of surgery' and on medication as he begins his long road to recovery. 'I don't know if he knows the two little ones have lost their lives,' Mr Arya said.

While the legal process unfolds, the community has united in grief, visiting the crash site to pay their respects to the young brothers. A makeshift memorial has been established at the tree where the accident occurred, adorned with flowers and teddy bears. The profound impact of the crash is evident, with marks etched into the tree and debris scattered around the area.

Authorities are looking into the possibility of street racing playing a role in the tragedy. They are particularly interested in locating a grey sedan believed to have been present during the incident, as captured by CCTV. The investigation aims to determine whether the Subaru and the grey sedan were involved in street racing prior to the collision.

For anyone with relevant information, dash cam footage, or CCTV recordings, the police urge you to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. Information can be shared with the authorities or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

Image: GoFundMe

Mystery object washed up on WA beach finally identified

Ok space enthusiasts and beachcombers. Here's one for the X-Files – Intergalactic Travel edition.

Picture this: A strange and baffling object, looking like it's straight out of a sci-fi flick, decided to take a little trip to Green Head beach, about 250 kilometres north of Perth on the pristine WA coastline.

As soon as the locals caught sight of this extraterrestrial-looking thingamajig, the news spread like wildfire, and it made international headlines faster than a speeding rocket, with all kinds of fascinating theories popping up as to what on Earth (or not on Earth) it could be.

Was it a UFO? A top-secret government experiment gone awry? Well, turns out it was nothing that exciting. The Australian Space Agency put on their Sherlock Holmes hats and deduced that this enigmatic piece of debris probably came from a satellite launch vehicle. Eureka! Case closed!

Of course, when something weird and otherworldly shows up on your doorstep, you can't be too careful. So, the local authorities played it safe and put the object under police guard for an entire week. (Better safe than sorry, right?)

And who needs a red carpet when you have a front-end loader to transport your newfound cosmic artifact? The experts were summoned to figure out where this space junk came from, and they concluded it was most likely a fuel tank from some rocket launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation.

Professor Alice Gorman from Flinders University explained to ABC News that this fuel containment vessel was meant to fall off after launch. And it turns out that statistically, we've been pretty lucky not to have had more collisions with falling rocket parts. Imagine explaining that to your insurance company? "A rocket booster landed on my house. Is that covered?"

But here comes the tricky part: What to do with all of this space garbage? Should they ship it back to India like some interstellar postcard, or leave it Down Under as an intergalactic souvenir?

While India is technically (and legally) responsible for their space debris, they could decide to gift it to Australia if they so choose. It could be like an exotic space decoration for the country - "The Land of Kangaroos and Rocket Wreckage."

Even better, the Green Head community itself appear to have come up with a few fabulous ideas. Forget the Sydney Opera House: let's make the space debris a tourist attraction! Move over, Eiffel Tower - we've got our own piece of space history right here.

The WA Premier even suggested storing it next to space debris from NASA's Skylab space station (remember that?) in some kind of attempt to build a cosmic cabinet of curiosities.

Of course, the local council is also very keen on keeping this celestial treasure. They're hoping the Indian government won't come back to claim it, to the point that everyone in the surrounding Shire of Coorow is buzzing with excitement over the possibility of having their very own space souvenir to draw crowds of star trekkers.

And so while the mystery of the object on the beach has been solved, the debate over its fate is just beginning. Will it become a star attraction in a local park? Or will it be shipped off to India like an interplanetary package return? Only time will tell.

Images: Nine News

Astonishing report identifies Covid’s alleged “patient zero”

A bombshell report has claimed the infamous Covid-19 "patient zero” was a Wuhan scientist carrying out experiments on souped-up coronaviruses.

The scientist in question, Ben Hu, was conducting risky tests at the Wuhan Institute of Virology with two colleagues, Ping You and Yan Zhu, the report states.

It is understood that all three suffered Covid-like symptoms and required hospital care weeks before China broke the news of the virus outbreak to the rest of the world.

The Sun reported that the name of “patient zero" has never been disclosed until now.

Many US government officials have now identified the three scientists in a shocking report by journalists Michael Shellenberger and Matt Taibbi.

Writing in the Substack newsletter Public, the pair alleged the scientists were experimenting with coronaviruses when they fell ill in 2019.

Several experts and intelligence officials have long suspected scientists at the lab accidentally spread the virus during so-called “gain of function” experiments on bat coronaviruses.

The naming of “patient zero” could prove to be the smoking gun, only adding to mounting circumstantial evidence of a lab leak.

It is unclear who in the US government had the intelligence about the sick lab workers, how long they had it, and why it was not shared with the public.

The Australian journalist and Sky News host Sharri Markson spoke to The Sun about the lab leak theory in 2021 and dubbed it an “explosive development”.

Jamie Metzl, a former member of the World Health Organisation advisory committee on human genome editing, described it as a possible “game changer”.

“It’s a game changer if it can be proven that Hu got sick with Covid before anyone else,” he said.

“That would be the ‘smoking gun’. Hu was the lead hands-on researcher in (virologist Shi Zhengli’s) lab.”

DRASTIC, an international team of scientists and sleuths attempting to piece together Covid-19’s origins, researched the three scientists in 2021.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology’s website lists Hu’s biography showing he was working as an assistant researcher.

He was said to be the “star pupil” of virologist Shi Zhengli — the virologist at the lab who became known as “batwoman” for her research on bat coronaviruses.

Markson, the author of What Really Happened in Wuhan, said that Hu was running a state-funded project in 2019 to test if new coronaviruses could infect humans.

The study involved souping up the viruses and experimenting with them on humanised mice.

However, the results were never published and the study’s existence was erased from the internet as Covid-19 was spreading around the globe, which raised suspicion of a possible lab leak.

A source told The Sun that footage from 2017 that was aired by Chinese state-run TV showed Hu working in the lab without protective gear.

The same video shows scientists from the Wuhan lab searching for bat viruses with inadequate protective gear.

Alina Chan, a molecular biologist at MIT and Harvard, told Public, “Ben Hu is essentially the next Shi Zhengli.

“He was her star pupil. He had been making chimeric SARS-like viruses and testing these in humanised mice.

“If I had to guess who would be doing this risky virus research and most at risk of getting accidentally infected, it would be him.”

She noted, “If this info had been made public in May of 2020, I doubt that many in the scientific community and the media would have spent the last three years raving about a raccoon dog or pangolin in a wet market.”

US scientist Dr Steven Quay, “He was always my first choice for one of the infected Wuhan Institute of Virology workers but it seemed too simple.”

A bill signed by US President Joe Biden in 2023 called for the release of the names of the sick scientists, their symptoms, and whether they had been involved with or exposed to coronavirus research.

The US is currently preparing to release previously classified material, which could include the names of the three Wuhan scientists.

Earlier in 2023, FBI director Christopher Wray said, “the FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan”.

China has long been accused of attempting to cover up or distort its involvement with Covid-19, but they continue to deny claims.

In March 2023, China’s former government scientist confessed the Wuhan lab leak theory shouldn’t be ruled out, sparking uproar in Beijing.

Professor George Gao, the former chief of China’s Centre for Disease Control, played a key role in the efforts to trace the origins of Covid-19, insisting scientists should “suspect anything”.

Speaking to the BBC Radio 4 podcast Fever: The Hunt for Covid’s Origin, Professor Gao said, “You can always suspect anything. That’s science.

“Don’t rule out anything.”

Professor Gao retired from the CDC in 2022 after playing a key role in the pandemic response and efforts to find the mysterious origin of the virus.

He would have had access to highly classified government information on the outbreak of Covid-19.

According to Professor Gao, a formal investigation into the Wuhan Institute of Virology was carried out by a government department.

The government scientist claimed the “lab was double-checked by the experts in the field”.

Investigators believe scientists were working with the Chinese military to develop a mutant virus and pursue bioweapons just as the pandemic began.

The findings followed a team of US investigators who combed through top-secret intercepted communications and research.

In 2016, researchers discovered a new fatal type of coronavirus in a mineshaft in Mojiang, Yunnan province.

However, they kept it under wraps, with the sample then transported to the Wuhan lab and dubbed as classified work.

The virus is the only known immediate relative of Covid-19 known to exist prior to the pandemic.

Speaking to The Times, one US investigator said, “The trail of papers starts to go dark.

“That’s exactly when the classified program kicked off.

“My view is that the reason it was covered up was due to military secrecy related to the army’s pursuit of dual-use capabilities in virological biological weapons and vaccines.”

The findings came after a scientist who worked closely with the Wuhan lab claimed the virus was genetically engineered and leaked from the facility.

"More than we can bear": Hunter Valley bus crash victims identified

The names of the 10 people who lost their lives in the Hunter Valley wedding bus tragedy have been made public, just two days after the devastating incident occurred.

And while their heartbroken families have been informed by police officials that formal identifications could take anywhere from days up to weeks, The Daily Telegraph have reported that 10 people could not be accounted for in the wake of the crash.

36 people were on board the coach bound for Singleton, 35 wedding guests - and the bus driver - who had just spent the day celebrating the love and nuptials of local sporting enthusiasts Mitchell Gaffney and Madeleine Edsell at Wandin Valley Estate.

The group were onboard in foggy conditions at around 11:30 pm, before the bus rolled roughly 17 minutes into their evening journey, at a roundabout at Wine Country Drive.

Emergency services raced to the scene, and while 25 people were pulled from the wreckage and rushed for treatment with injuries varying from the likes of critical head and neck trauma to broken bones, 10 people could not be saved.

As reported by The Daily Telegraph, those 10 victims included locals and interstate visitors, all near and dear to the young bride and groom and the rest of their guests.

From Singleton were husband and wife Andrew and Lynan Scott, as well as Tori Cowburn and Rebecca Mullen. Mother and daughter Nadene and Kyah McBride were also from the area. Zachary Bray had travelled from Byron Bay for the big day, while Darcy Bulman had come from Sydney, and Angus Craig had made the trip from Queensland.

And like the others, the 10th fatality - Kyah’s partner Kane Symons - remains unaccounted for.

And as NSW Premier Chris Minns warned while speaking to the media the day after the crash, things may get harder in the weeks to come.

“The state woke up this morning to hear devastating news in an area that we normally associate with so much happiness and joy. Whatever the final toll is in this accident, it will be more than we can bear,” he said.

“The next few days and weeks may be worse than the initial shock, as it fully comes to realisation of what this community has gone through.”

However, as NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said, “I see there’s some speculation about the identity of those 10 persons - we cannot confirm the identity of those 10 victims.

“We’ll work through the disaster victim identification process over the next few days. Our investigators, our family liaison officers, are speaking to the families and victims. We are in contact. That process will continue throughout the investigation and the court process.”

Waddell did note that the bus passengers were in their “20s to 60s”, and that they were “males and females, local and interstate, as you’d expect.”

“It’s a traumatic event for all the family,” he added, “all the friends, from what was a wedding where people come from wide and far.”

Images: 7News / Seven

Missing cruise ship passenger identified

The Australian man who went overboard on a cruise ship has been identified as a 35-year-old man from Brisbane, as the frantic search for his body was called off.

Warwick Tollemache went overboard on the Quantum of The Seas early Wednesday evening (AEST), about 1400 kilometres south of the Hawaiian islands, prompting an immediate search by the vessel's crew, with the US Coast Guard was called in to assist.

The search for Tollemache was called off in the early hours of Friday morning, as his family shared a heart-breaking statement about his death.

"Our family is heartbroken at the loss of our beloved Warwick," his family said.

"He was a kind, beautiful, and gentle soul who was adored by everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed."

"We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding."

Upon hearing of Tollemache going overboard, the US Coast Guard issued a widespread radio message to alert ships in the area to a distress situation, calling for all vessels in the Pacific Ocean, south of Hawaii, to help look for the man.

Coast Guards were searching the site with a C-130 Hercules for the missing man to no avail so far.

"They were able to cast out a few life rings," US Coast Guard Ryan Fisher said.

"Just so if he was in the vicinity in the water he could be able to grab onto them."

After six hours of searching, the aircraft was forced to return to Hawaii to refuel, as the US Navy was also called in to help look.

Passenger Susan Whittington noted there was "quite a large swell" overnight making it "almost impossible" for the search.

The Quantum of The Seas has since arrived at Kona on Hawaii's Big Island, where passengers disembarked for some time ashore.

"Couldn't really fathom what happened," Jayden, from South Australia, told 9News.

"The ship handled it pretty well. We got sent back to our stay rooms and then they let us go back to our normal business."

Passengers recalled being woken by the PA system calling "oscar, oscar, oscar", the ship's code for man overboard.

Those onboard were shocked by the ordeal, recounting a "sombre" mood on board the ship as it continues to its destination.

"It's a shocking situation to be in," Whittington said.

"Help me!": Sydney dad executed in front of son identified

A father has been gunned down in front of his 12-year-old son in a suspected organised crime attack.

Taha Sabbagh, a chauffeur who had often dealt with celebrities in his line of work, was in the car with his child when the horrific attack took place. The two were sitting inside of Taha’s Mercedes SUV outside of Elite Fight Force gym in Sydney’s southwestern auburn of Sefton at around 6:30 am when the shots were fired.

Police responded to the reports of gunshots, and arrived to find a wounded Taha, who was treated by paramedics but ultimately passed away at the scene. The authorities have reported that the morning attack appeared to be targeted, and that Taha’s son made it out without physical injury.

However, the young boy didn’t make it out entirely unscathed, having watched the entire scene unfold. Police made the confirmation, stating that 40-year-old Taha had been “shot with his 12-year-old son right next to him.”

As one witness told The Daily Telegraph, “all I heard was a young guy screaming ‘help me, help me, my dad’s been shot’.”

Another witness spoke to 2GB’s Ben Fordham Live about the incident, recalling his hope that it had just been a car backfiring, and that he “hesitated to go to the front of the workshop, obviously, and slowly looked out the window and saw people coming out.

“Within minutes there was a load of ambulances, police everywhere, and then we saw a man on the ground, not in a good way ... It was frightening.”

"It is horrendous a 12-year-old had to witness his father being shot dead in this manner," Superintendent Danny Doherty told reporters, commenting that what Taha’s son had seen was “very traumatising.”

He also shared the police suspicion that Taha’s death “has all the hallmarks of an organised crime related murder … it was callous and brazen and [Taha’s killer] had little regard for human life.”

“I know this happened in daylight in a suburban area of Sydney,” head of NSW’s Homicide Squad Detective Superintendent Doherty said, “and I think the community should be appalled that this happened in front of a 12-year-old. Quite rightly.

“We’ve got a 40-year-old man who has been shot down in front of his son, and he is the victim.”

Facebook’s Request Dua page shared the news of Taha’s death with its followers, paying tribute to the fallen man and remembering him as “a loving son, brother, father, husband, he was loved by many.

“He will be missed greatly by all who knew him … Please remember our beloved and family and loved ones in your Dua. We ask Allah to give his family, wife and children comfort during this test.”

Images: Instagram, 9News

Helicopter crash victims identified

The four people who died in the devastating helicopter crash on the Gold Coast have been identified.

Sydney mother Vanessa Tadros died in the crash while her 10-year-old son survived the collision and is fighting for life in hospital.

British nationals Ron and Diane Hughes, 65 and 57, who were celebrating their recent wedding, were also killed.

The helicopter's pilot Ash Jenkinson, 40, who'd been working at Sea World since 2019 and mentored friends in the aviation industry, was the first to be identified as having died in the crash.

As well as Tadros' son, another mother Winnie De Silva and her nine-year-old son Leon survived the crash and remain in hospital.

Jenkinson's friend Andy Taylor paid tribute to his friend, sharing the important work he did in helping flood victims across the Northern Rivers in 2022.

"It was a team effort with a group of our mates and Ash jumped on board straight away when he heard what we were doing," Taylor told Today.

"And because of him, we could rescue a lot of people, get a lot of food and supplies to people that otherwise would have never got them."

"It was really humbling to know that he leaves a bit of a legacy, especially with the guys and everyone in the Northern Rivers area. It was a very special thing for him to do."

Taylor said he couldn't imagine what Jenkinson's Helensvale-based family, including his one-year-old son, were going through.

"He was always there," Taylor said.

"Like I said before, he was a big guy with a big heart and a true legend that's certainly left a bit of a legacy in the aviation space."

Investigations have begun into the cause of the crash, with Australian Transport Safety Bureau Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell saying it was too early to determine an exact cause of the tragic accident.

"We have a reasonable understanding of what the two helicopters were doing, as I said, in those critical phases of flight, but exactly why this occurred, what was the range of visibility from both the pilots, what was happening inside the cabins at the time, they're the things that will help us piece together, potentially what may have been a contributing factor here," Mitchell said.

"But it's still very early stages in the investigation to start speculating."

The two police officers who were executed at a Queensland rural property have been identified.

Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow were at a property in the western Darling Downs, about three hours west of Brisbane when they were shot on December 12.

One of the neighbours, Alan Dare, 58, was also shot and killed in the attack which led to a manhunt for the alleged attackers.

Police services around the country offered their condolences to the families of Constable Arnold and Constable McCrow after their heroic actions.

“It is with a heavy heart we confirm the deaths of Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow,” Queensland Police wrote on Facebook.

“Their lives were cut tragically short in the line of duty at Wieambilla yesterday.

“With Honour They Served.”

Police were at the rural property in response to a missing person, who was later identified as former school principal Nathaniel Train.

There were grave concerns for Mr Train who disappeared from Dubbo in the NSW Central West in early December.

Constable Arnold and Constable McCrow were joined by two other officers, Constable Keeley Brough and Constable Randall Kirk, both aged 28, at the property.

A six-hour siege ensued, with the officers opening fire about 4.45 pm which saw Constable Arnold and Constable McCrow killed.

Constable Kirk was also wounded while Constable Brough, who was only eight weeks into her new role, managed to escape and raise the alarm.

The pair were finally joined by Special Operations police and helped them shoot dead three suspects, including brothers Nathaniel and Gareth Train, and a third female, after a six hour siege.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll was heartbroken at describing what had happened, following the death of her colleagues.

“This has been incredibly distressing and tragic for everyone, particularly family, officers involved, colleagues, the organisation and the community,” she said.

“As you would appreciate. It is an extremely emotional and challenging time for the Queensland Police Service. Losing one of our own has a profound impact on every single officer and their families. To lose two officers in one incident is absolutely devastating.

“This event is the largest loss of police life we have suffered in a single incident in many years.

“I want to pay tribute to the two other officers who attended....they bravely did what they could to save their colleagues in the most horrendous circumstances. Their bravery was beyond belief.

“Thank you also to the specialist police and other first stand-of-responders who were involved in the dangerous confrontation for many hours last night. Matthew and Rachel were highly respected and much loved members of the Queensland Police Service.

“They were both committed and courageous young people who had a passion for policing and for serving their community.

“Both are under 30 years of age. Both had wonderful careers and lives ahead of them.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also offered his condolences to the fallen officers.

“Terrible scenes in Wieambilla and a heartbreaking day for the families and friends of the Queensland Police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty,” he wrote on Twitter.

“My condolences to all who are grieving tonight – Australia mourns with you.”

Images: Facebook
