Accommodation
You can rent this crazy and colourful loft on Airbnb

These loud and colourful homes look like children’s playground structure at a first glance, but it turns out there is an ingenuous method to their madness.
Ever been on a holiday and found the energy has just drained out of you? You may have an early morning expedition to the cherry blossoms planned, but your head is married to the pillow and not moving anytime soon. If you’re looking for a shake-up in productivity, this may be the invigorating escape you’ve been looking for.
These eccentric apartments, poetically named “Reversible destiny lofts” are just as extraordinary on the inside as they are on the outside.
The nine wacky rentals in Mikata, Tokyo, were built in 2005 and are the brainchild of husband and wife architectural duo Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins. Their playful layout is based on the premise that “stimulating architecture” can extend human life.
The unique space is designed to be as challenging as it is creative. With a chic sunken kitchen in middle and pod like rooms surrounding it, each space in the apartment serves a different purpose. One pod is for sleeping, one for working, one for showering, one for resting. Electrical outlets dangle from above, as well as sporadically placed hooks, allowing inhabitants to hang whatever they like. With 14 bright colours in the space, there are no less than six colours in your eye line at any one time. There’s also only one door to the outside – everything else is open. This is so inhabitants “reconsider their routines and interactions” and eventually feel more aware of both their behaviour and physical state.
The result is a living, breathing art work that boldly disrupts the normal patterns we fall into. It’s almost impossible for residents to settle into routines or get too comfortable in the groove of a couch, which means, you’re always moving!
Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins are firm believers that the key to a longer, more active life, lies in “reversing destiny” through architecture. Unfortunately, both have passed away, but their belief lives on in this incredible space.
